Habit Perennials, 1–2+ cm (± pulvinate). Biennials (sometimes persisting), 15–25+ cm.

Leaves

± campanulate, 6–10 mm diam.

corollas white or pinkish adaxially, laminae 4–8 mm, abaxially usually glabrous, sometimes sparsely glandular-puberulent.

Phyllaries

20–28 in 3–4+ series, the longer ± lanceolate, 5–7 mm (l/w = 2.5–5), sometimes glabrate, apices obtuse to acute, abaxial faces usually ± strigillose.

40–44 in 4–5+ series, the longer ± lanceolate, 5–9+ mm (l/w = 2.5–5), apices acute to attenuate (soft, not apiculate), abaxial faces strigose.

Heads

± sessile.

at tips of stems (usually surpassed by leaves).

Cypselae

2–3.5 mm, faces hairy, hair tips entire or forked;

pappi persistent, 15–30 subulate to setiform scales 3–5 mm.

3.5–4 mm, faces hairy, hair tips glochidiform;

pappi persistent;

on ray cypselae ± 20 lanceolate to subulate scales 0.5–0.8(–2+) mm;

on disc cypselae 16–24 subulate to setiform scales 5 mm.
