Cusick's lupine

Habit Herbs short-lived, 10–25 cm, matted, densely hairy. Herbs 5(–10) cm, canescent, taprooted.
Stems

very short or absent, densely tufted.

ascending-erect, several from taproot, profusely branched at base, elongated stem internode 1–3 cm.

Leaves

basal;

leaflet blades 8–20 mm, surfaces densely hairy.

basal and cauline;

leaflet blades 10–25 mm, surfaces hairy.

(2–)3–6 cm, not exceeding leaves, dense.

2–10 cm, not exserted beyond leaves, or only partially so, loose.

Habitat Mountain meadows, gravel bars, streambeds, lakeshores, sand or rocks, with sage­brush, lodgepole pine forests and above timberline. Barren tuffaceous or gravelly clay bluffs and gullied riverbanks, usually associated with junipers, sagebrush, and Eriogonum.

Discussion

Variety utahensis is widespread in the Rocky and Great Basin mountains from central Idaho and western Montana southward to northwestern New Mexico and northeastern Arizona (Chuska Mountains in Apache County), westward to eastern Oregon, northern Nevada, and eastern Lassen County, California, and disjunct in the White Mountains on the California-Nevada border.

Variety cusickii is known from a few populations near Unity in Baker County, Oregon (K. A. Weitemier 2010) and near Donnelly and McCall in Valley County, Idaho.
