Annuals, biennials, or short-lived perennials, 4–80 cm; fibrous-rooted, caudices simple. |
Perennials, 5–15(–24) cm; taprooted, caudices branches relatively thick and short, retaining old leaf bases. |
erect (green proximally, leafy to arrays), hirsuto-villous to villous proximally, loosely strigose to sparsely hirsute distally, minutely glandular. |
ascending to decumbent (greenish proximally), usually loosely strigose (hairs ascending, attenuate, basal cells erect), uncommonly hirsute or hirtellous (hairs spreading-deflexed), eglandular. |
basal (persistent or withering by flowering) and cauline; basal blades oblanceolate to obovate, (15–)30–110(–150) × 10–25(–40) mm, margins shallowly crenate to coarsely serrate or pinnately lobed, faces sparsely hirsute to villous, eglandular; cauline blades oblong-oblanceolate to lanceolate, gradually reduced distally (bases clasping to auriculate-clasping). |
basal (persistent) and cauline; basal blades usually oblanceolate, 15–70 × 2–6(–8) mm (bases attenuate), margins entire (apices rounded to obtuse); cauline blades linear to linear-oblong or narrowly lanceolate-oblong, mostly 10–40 × 1.5–4 mm, gradually reduced distally; faces strigose, eglandular. |
4–6 × 6–15 mm. |
3.7–5.2 × (5–)10–11 mm. |
150–250(–400); corollas usually white, sometimes pinkish, 5–10 mm, laminae not coiling or tardily coiling. |
35–60; corollas blue to pink or white, 5–6 mm, laminae weakly coiling. |
2.1–3.2 mm. |
2.5–4 mm. |
in 2–3 series (sometimes basally connate), hirsuto-villous to sparsely hirsute or glabrous, sometimes minutely glandular. |
in 2–3(–4) series, strigose to strigulose or finely hirsuto-villous, minutely glandular. |
(1–)3–35 usually in corymbiform arrays (ultimate branches arising near stem tips). |
1–4. |
0.6–1.1 mm, 2-nerved, faces sparsely strigose; pappi: outer of setae, inner of 15–20(–30) bristles. |
1.5–2 mm, 2-nerved, faces strigose; pappi: outer of setae, inner of 12–20 bristles. |

Of conservation concern. Erigeron abajoensis is a segregate of E. caespitosus, separated from the latter only by its strigose (versus hirsute) stems and leaves and greater tendency for 1-nerved leaves. Further, some populations of E. abajoensis have plants variable in orientation of stem vestiture [both antrorsely appressed and deflexed; e.g., Cronquist 9430, Garfield Co., Utah (BRIT, NY); Heil and Clifford 17919, Apache Co., Ariz. (BRIT, SJNM)] and similar variation in cauline vestiture also occurs in E. caespitosus. (Discussion copyrighted by Flora of North America; reprinted with permission.) |
1. Cauline leaf faces sparsely hirsute to villous | var. philadelphicus |
1. Cauline leaf faces glabrous or glabrate | → 2 |
2. Leaves of basal rosettes withering by flowering; salt marshes, British Columbia | var. glaber |
2. Leaves of basal rosettes persistent through flowering; crevices in shale or dolomite, usually beside rivers or lakes, Ontario, Quebec, New York, and Vermont | var. provancheri |
